Cement Based Boards FAQs

Cement Based Boards and the Benefits

Cement board is a construction material typically used as a backing for tiles and flooring. These cement based boards consist of 4 ft by 8 ft sheets, each between a quarter or half an inch in thickness. Convenient and inexpensive, cement boards add strength to a surface and can also add sound resistance.

Particle Based Cement BoardCement board is made from cement and reinforcing fibres which are resistant to water, making them a good solution for bathrooms and kitchens where moisture levels can be high.

Are Cement Based Boards Mould Resistant?

Porcelain or ceramic tiles have areas that can allow moisture to penetrate through to the underlying board over time. While cement boards are not waterproof, they contain no organic materials and offer superior water resistance than boards made from organic materials, plus they dry quickly when exposed to moisture. This helps prevent mould forming and prevents deterioration in the cement board. Cement boards also reduce the chances of underlying wall studs rotting.

Is it Simple to Install?

Cement boards are installed in much the same way as drywall. However, the main difference is the weight of cement boards, which are heavy and normally require two people to handle them into place. A circular saw with a heavy duty blade will be required to cut the sheets.

You should allow for a small gap between the boards to account for heat expansion, while also ensuring a small gap when installing above a bath to prevent the wicking of moisture. A water resistant silicone-based caulk can be used to fill in the joints once the cement boards are in position.

Is Cement Board Preferable to Drywall?

Cement based boards offer more strength and durability than drywall sheets. As drywall is made from organic materials it is less water resistant than cement board and therefore not as suitable for installations in bathrooms, shower rooms and kitchens where moisture levels can be high.

Can I Use Cement Board for Exteriors?

While cement board is ideal as a sub-stratum for interior walls and floors it can also be applied outdoors. Its durability and resistance to water make it suitable for exterior walls, though its appearance can put people off using it.
